First patented in 1949, cyanoacrylates are synthetic adhesive molecules that when heated become a monomer. Chemists can create compounds with different molecular chain lengths by altering the alkoxycarbonyl group to the molecule. The result is a special type of monomer which reacts to water or bases with an exothermic hydroxylation that polymerizes the compound. In medical applications, the monomer material polymerizes upon contact with the human body, forming a strong, flexible adhesive bond.

Cyanoacrylate derivatives can be roughly divided into “short-chain” and “long-chain” groups. These derivatives have varying properties, with shorter-chain derivates more histotoxic than the stronger longer-chain derivatives.

The main types of cyanoacrylates are ethyl cyanoacrylates, butyl cyanoacrylates, and 2-octyl cyanoacrylates. These adhesives have found a broad range of applications within and outside of medical use.

2-Octyl Cyanoacrylates
The compound 2-octyl cyanoacrylate is a long carbon chain cyanoacrylate derivative. There are several different types of compounds that can properly be called 2-octyl cyanoacrylate, including those that contain four carbons (shorter carbon chain). In general, long carbon chain cyanoacrylates are stronger, more pliable, and less histotoxic than shorter carbon chain derivates.

Closure Medical develops and manufactures a proprietary 2-octyl cyanoacrylate compound with a long carbon chain (eight carbons) to such rigorous standards of purity that the substance is biocompatible while retaining its excellent bonding strength. In fact, Closure Medical is the only company to have received approval from the FDA to market its 2-octyl cyanoacrylate based products commercially.

In addition to their benefits as safe, effective, flexible and tenacious adhesive devices for topical wound closure, products using Closure Medical’s technology have been shown to act as a microbial barrier, keeping bacteria out of topical wounds.
