Daniel A. Pelak
President and CEO

Daniel A. Pelak was appointed President and Chief Executive Offer of Closure Medical in September 2002 after serving 26 years at Medtronic in a variety of positions, including sales, marketing, and general management. Immediately prior to joining Closure, Daniel Pelak was Vice President and General Manager of Medtronic’s Perfusion Systems Division. Previous positions include Vice President and General Manager of Cardiac Surgery Technologies and Vice President of Cardiovascular Marketing. He holds a B.S. degree from Pennsylvania State University.


Benny Ward
CFO and VP of Finance

Benny Ward has served as Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer since April 2000, promoted from his previous position as controller (1996-2000). Prior to that, Benny Ward was a Senior Accountant at Price Waterhouse LLP in Raleigh. He holds bachelor degrees in accounting and political science from East Carolina University and is a certified public account.


James F. Buck
VP of Marketing

James F. Buck has served as Vice President of Marketing since April 2003. Prior to joining the company, he spent almost eleven years with St. Jude Medical in various roles of increasing responsibility, including rotations through cardiac rhythm management, marketing research, independent sales and sales management, corporate business development, and electrophysiology product marketing through its Daig Division. Most recently, he was Senior Director of Healthcare Services, a corporate strategic marketing position. James Buck holds a MM degree from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a BS from Indiana University.


William M. Cotter
VP of Manufacturing and Operations

William M. Cotter has served as Vice President of Manufacturing and Operations since June 1997. Prior to that, from 1989 to 1997, he was Vice President of Operations (North America) of Sanofi Diagnostics Pasteur, Inc., a company involved in the design, manufacturing, and marketing of in-vitro diagnostics instrumentation and biological reagents. From 1984 to 1988, he worked at Genetic Systems Corporation, a subsidiary of Bristol Myers, where he was involved in the commercialization of one of the first diagnostic test kits for the HIV virus. William Cotter holds a B.A. degree from Ohio University.


J. Michael Hoban
VP of Human Resources

J. Michael Hoban has served as Vice President of Human Resources since January 2004, immediately prior to this appointment Mike served as the company's Director, Human resources for six years. Prior to joining Closure Medical in January 1998, Mike Hoban spent twenty years with Bristol-Myers Squibb Inc. serving in such capacities as Vice President Human Resources for the Zimmer Surgical Products Division and Corporate Director, International Human Resources for all Asian Pacific operations. He holds a BA in Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University.


Jerry Y. Jonn
VP of Research

Jerry Y. Jonn, Ph.D. has served as Vice President of Research since January 2004. Prior to that he served as VP, Internal Product Development since July 2001, promoted from his previous position as Director, Absorbable Products Research. Before joining Closure in 1999, Jerry Jonn worked at U.S. Surgical in North Haven, Connecticut, where he headed its research and development program. Jerry Jonn earned his MS and Ph.D. degrees in polymer chemistry from Cornell University.


Bruce J. Krattenmaker
VP of Regulatory, Clinical and Quality Assurance

Bruce J. Krattenmaker has served as Vice President of Regulatory, Clinical and Quality Assurance since January 2004. Mr. Krattenmaker has over twenty years of experience within the quality assurance and regulatory field. Most recently, Mr. Krattenmaker served as Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance and Clinical Programs at Ev3 Inc. where he was responsible for developing and executing regulatory strategies on a global basis. He also held various executive positions at Boston Scientific Corporation, C.R. Bard, Inc. and Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Mr. Krattenmaker has a BS in Biology and an MS in Microbiology and Biochemistry, each from Northern Illinois University.


Gabriel N. Szabo
VP of Product Development

Gabriel N. Szabo was appointed Vice President of Product Development in January 2004, promoted from his position of Director of Marketing for Closure Medical's consumer care products. Prior to joining the company in 1999, Gabriel Szabo worked for Johnson & Johnson in various marketing roles. Most recently, he was the product director of the PEPCID® AC brand in the J&J/Merck joint venture. Prior to J&J, he worked for General Electric Company in various management, product development, and engineering roles. Gabriel Szabo holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University and an MBA from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.
